Tomato Varieties for 2022

Dark Galaxy Heirloom Tomato – Indeterminate, 70 days

One of the most beautiful and unusual looking tomatoes! The 1-4 oz. fruit are beautifully mottled and speckled in varying amounts, starting off purplish and ripening to a rust color. Very productive and beautiful! (70 days from transplant) Staking is required for this indeterminate type.

Harvesting tip: For best taste harvest when the tomato is fully ripe and has expressed all its full color. But in Calgary it is best to harvest when the tomato is still green and has expressed its first blush; in this case, let tomato finish ripening off-vine at a temperature above 21°C.

Storage tip for all tomatoes: Store at 12-21°C not in the fridge with a relative humidity of 95%. Tomato may damage at a temperature of 10°C.

Brandywine Heirloom Tomato – Indeterminate 90 days

(Sudduth's Strain). This is a tricky tomato to grow in Calgary. Recommended for an experienced tomato grower. However, it is legendary for its delicious taste and the Sudduth’s Strain is considered by many to be the most delicious strain available. I like it best for tomato sauce it can be watery on a sandwich. This particular strain was obtained in 1980 from Doris Sudduth Hill. Doris claimed that it had been in her family for 80 years. The large deep pink beefsteak fruit can grow 1-2 pounds and are quite late maturing.  It is simply an exceptional tomato that no tomato grower should be without! Cherokee Purple Heirloom Tomato – Indeterminate 75-80 days

The Cherokee Purple Tomato is one of my favourites, The seed was originally grown by the Cherokee Indians, this wonderful heirloom is more than 100 years old. The seed for Cherokee Purple was sent to Craig LeHoullier by John D. Green of Sevierville, Tennessee. John D. Green received the seed from a lady who obtained them from her neighbor who claimed that they were originally grown by the Cherokee Indians. The fruit of Cherokee Purple is a dark purplish pink color and often has green shoulders. The large fruit average 12 oz. and are delicious. The plants are very productive and reliable. Beefsteak Rouge de Marmande 75 days

An early-maturing big Beefsteak tomato which was a French favourite with outstanding flavour and few seeds. Clusters of deep red, large flattened ribbed fruit that can grow up to 9cm (3.5in) across. It is early maturing and suits temperate climates because it will set fruit at lower temperatures than other varieties. Best if staked and this variety has also got good disease and pest resistance. Excellent source of Vitamin C, A and E, potassium, fibre and antioxidants. Cooking Tip: great tomato for sandwiches, salads and sauces.

Indigo Rose Semi Determinate Open Pollinated 80 days

Indigo Rose organic is a dark purple-skinned tomatoes. The flavour of these tomatoes is clean and clear, reminiscent of plums, with a slightly acidic sweetness you'll only find in home-grown tomatoes. The so-called "saladette" style fruits average 50g (1.7 oz.) Developed by Jim Myers at the Oregon State University using traditional plant breeding techniques, Indigo Rose Organic tomato seeds are the first improved tomato variety in the world that has the powerful antioxidant anthocyanin in the fruit. Indigo Rose organic tomatoes hang in clusters from vigorous sprawling vines with wild, curly leaves. Plants are hardy and have good disease resistance.

It can be tricky to tell if the tomato is ripe until you know the trick. As the fruit matures the skin will become purple where exposed to light and the fruit tends to have a purple crown. This is caused by the antioxidant anthocyanin reacting to the sun. The fruits are ripe when their skin colour changes from a shiny blue-purple to a dull purple-brown. The fruit also softens similarly to regular tomatoes, and the bottom of the tomatoes will turn from green to red when ripe.

San Marzano Heirloom Indeterminate 80 days

All the way from Italy, this rare heirloom is famous for its incredible flavour. The lobed fruits look like long, blocky red peppers with firm pulp and thick skins. They are perfect for canning, oven drying or making pastes and sauces. The vines are vigorous and indeterminate, with excellent disease resistance. Once you taste this fantastic tomato, you'll wish you had twice as many plants. The fruits also keep for ages due to their low water content.

Early Cascade Indeterminate Open Pollenated 55 days

Early Cascade is a nice tomato to grow. It produces a super abundant yield from early summer to the first frost. Fruits are bright red, full of flavour, and of medium size to 110g (4 oz.) each. Perfect for salads and sandwiches, but versatile enough for home processing and canning. This variety also has very good disease resistance. It has been specially bred for cooler climates, and gardening west of the Cascade mountains.
